Haarlem is at the forefront of eco initiatives and sustainable developments. You stroll through courtyards with ornate gardens and shop in vintage stores. And not unimportantly: you can eat deliciously vegan. Did you know that the very best vegan restaurant of 2022 is located here? Our 24-hour program will take you there. Hop on the train and let the green adventure in Haarlem begin.
10:00 a.m.: A colorful green breakfast at ByLima
When you think of healthy and sustainable eating, do you think mostly of green salads? After your visit to ByLima it will be different. The ladies of this cheerful breakfast and lunch joint transform organic and local seasonal produce into brilliant edible paintings. From chocolate cakes with colorful violets to pastel-colored cupcakes with bright red strawberries. And yes, salads, too. But in colors that pop off your plate. Try to snag a spot on the flower wall - with real fake flowers - and you'll have the perfect setting for a new Instagram photo.Â
You walk from Haarlem station to ByLima in 11 minutes.Â
- Opening hours ByLima: Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

11:00 a.m.: On a sustainable shop hunt
After your breakfast at ByLima, go green bargain hunting in the atmospheric city center. Stroll in at NYHAVN, where you'll browse among sustainable and fair trade treasures. The collection is a motley collection of products with a story. Fancy expanding your closet? On Koningstraat Find Lifestyle. Here you can score vintage finds from the '20s to '80s. Each item is unique so you can be sure no one else has it. For lovers of local crafts we recommend Sûr Atelier. Here a group of makers from refugee backgrounds work on their own designed garments. Your purchase is therefore not only sustainable, but also socially responsible.
From ByLima, you can walk to the shops in about 5 minutes.

In the gift store you score sustainable and unique items. Part of the collection consists of real Haarlem gadgets. How about socks with the Jopen church on them? The lunchroom is in the back of the store. Here you can enjoy dishes made from as many organic and regional products as possible. You will be helped by enthusiastic employees with disabilities. Tip: find a spot in the courtyard garden. A green oasis in the middle of the city.

2:00 p.m.: Visit the courtyards of Haarlem
Time to discover more of green Haarlem. The city is known for its many courtyards: only Amsterdam and Leiden count more. What makes Haarlem's courtyards unique is that you can see them all within walking distance. A rare courtyard is the Noblet courtyard. It has a courtyard and a garden facing the street. You almost never see that. Moreover, did you know that you can consult the old Haarlem Hofje regulations at the entrance? Tip: follow the Haarlem Hofjes route. Then visit all the courtyards in one walk.Â
From The World of Jansje, it takes a 12-minute walk or 5-minute bike ride to Noblet's Court.
- Check out the free route on the website of Haarlem courtyards
- The walk is 5.8 kilometers and takes you past 21 courtyards
- Opening hours Court of Noblet to the public: Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

3:30 p.m.: Drinking beers in the Jopenkerk, an icon in Haarlem
Ever drank a beer in a church? At the Jopenkerk in Haarlem, you can. This is a former church converted into a city brewery. Large, gleaming copper kettles sparkle here in front of colorful stained-glass windows. Take a seat at one of the tables in the Grand Café and order an ice-cold Jopen beer. We recommend the Jopen Ons Dagelijks Brood: a fresh English Pale Ale brewed with bread scraps. A sustainable pint, in other words. From your seat you have a good view of the brewing process. If you visit the Haarlem Jopen Church on a weekday, you can see the brewers at work in the brewery.
From Noblet's Hofje, you can walk to the Jopen Church in 15 minutes.
- Opening hours: Sunday through Thursday 10 a.m. - 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. - 1 a.m.Â
- There are 20 draft beers and 50 bottled beers that change very regularly. Check the current offer with prices on the website

17:00: To the roof terrace of Haarlem: DeDAKKAS
Are you in higher spirits after your visit to the Jopen Church? At TheDAKKAS in Haarlem, you'll linger there for a while. Here you are having drinks on the roof of parking garage De Kamp. In the middle of the terrace is a large glass greenhouse, which houses the restaurant's kitchen. You can enjoy a (non-alcoholic) draft beer or wine in the open air. Hungry? The menu features both small and larger dishes. Everything on the menu is plant-based, locally produced and seasonal as much as possible. We recommend the Asian-inspired eggplant from the Green Egg.

At Mama Gaia - meaning "Mother Earth" - everything is plant-based. All the vegetables on your plate come from organic farm Landzicht. Don't forget to take a tour of the property, either.
